3 Ways to Create a Cozy Space

Hi Hooga fam! My name is Grace Xiong, and I am a graduating senior at the University of Texas at Austin. I’m moving out of my current apartment and into a condominium next year, and my roommates and I want to create an aesthetically pleasing and cozy space for ourselves and our guests! I’m a novice when it comes to decorating places, so I have been doing some research, and I want to share with you what I’ve found that works for me.

1. Figure out your aesthetic

I’ve heard the term “aesthetic” thrown around a lot and didn’t bother getting onto the bandwagon, BUT there is something that just brightens my day when my surroundings are pleasing to my senses. I hopped onto Pinterest for cozy interior design ideas and SO many different styles options popped up. Right off the bat there’s pastel danish, cottagecore, girly (whatever that means), glam, goth, maximalist, retro, loft, and Spanish. I think I’m leaning more towards pastel danish, but you can choose whichever style best fits your tastes!

Look at those soft, comfy pillows and bedding! Also, hanging plants? What a concept!

Love the rustic feel, especially with the framed burned flower drawings

The textured brick wall, the quilted carpet, and the comfy sofa are a vibe~

    2. Think about home decoration

Now that I have a general style that I am a fan of thanks to Mariem El Sabbagh on Pinterest, it’s time to think about the specific items I want to use in decorating the interior of my new condo.

Items such as incense, plants, tea sets, pillows, chalkboards, baskets, blankets, a rustic, vintage, or antique find, painted furniture, candles, lamps, and books can add to the cozy environment. A big shoutout to Liz Marie and her blog for some of these ideas!

      3. Find interior decorator stores

Now that I have a general style and a general idea of home decor I want to buy for my condo, where should I buy them? I turned to my friend, the Internet, again for answers. An article on the Spruce by Taylor Davies has golden advice for me, a college student with a tight budget. For me, I think I’ll check out Wayfair, Walmart, and Etsy since the article’s description matches what I’m looking for, but they list many more stores depending on what you’re looking for. I would recommend checking out the store’s online website to see if the aesthetic matches what you’re looking for!
